Speaker: Empowering local initiatives

The Netherlands is maybe one of the most planned countries in the world. During the financial crisis it became clear that existing top-down models had limited effect and governments started to support and facilitate bottom-up initiatives. The involvement of citizens has led to a new shine of the cities. We’ll give a short introduction about the history of planning in the Netherlands, show some examples of bottom-up initiatives and would like to discuss with you what were the success factors in your country to combine top down planning and local citizens initiatives. Organisations: Urbanos + LIFT Cities Time: 2 PM – 3.30 PM

Involved in organising: Human Cities Coalition Side Event: Slum Dweller Stories – Tuesday, October 18, 12:30hrs
The Human Cities Coalition and Slum Dwellers International (SDI) invite participants to join a co-creation session in which we will hear stories from slum dwellers, and explore ten core principles for cities without slums. It will take place on Tuesday, October 18 from 12:30 to 13:30, in MR9, Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana “Benjamin Carrion,” Quito.

We will kick off the session with a Slum Federation leader who will share day-to-day experiences and partnership best practices. Together with slum dwellers from SDI, we will collectively design each principle. By the end of the session we will have created a manifesto for inclusive partnerships and projects for better cities. The Human Cities Coalition will use this manifesto in its activities in Jakarta and Manila in 2017. Come co-create the Human Cities Coalition Manifesto!
